Messianic Jewish Music: The Sacrifice Lamb

Music Only Video Embedded Below

-------------------------------

To really understand Christianity...one must understand it from within the framework of its Jewish history.

Jan van Eyck "Ghent Altarpiece", 1432
Detail: the lamb
Jesus, Jewish by birth, brought his message to "his" people first.  All of his disciples were Jewish and Paul, who is credited with writing a large portion of the New Testament was a Pharisee, a strict, high ranking order among the Jewish people of his day.

The early Christian church was often made up largely of converted Jews, but many also rejected Jesus as their messiah.

At the same time, Christianity spread among the Gentiles (non-jews) to the point that today some Christians don't fully understand the Jewish context of their faith.

Lamb, a Christian music group from the 1970's was made up of musicians who were  Jewish by birth.

Their music holds a wonderful place for many Christians because...as Jewish men...they well knew Christianity from within their own Jewish backgrounds...and it is clearly reflected in the music they wrote and performed.

In 1972 Messianic Jewish Music released a beautiful song by Lamb called The Sacrifice Lamb.

Written and sung by Joel Chernoff
Music by Rick "Levi" Coghill

---------------------------------
1 Who has believed our message
and to whom has the arm of the Lord been revealed?
He grew up before him like a tender shoot,
and like a root out of dry ground.
He had no beauty or majesty to attract us to him,
nothing in his appearance that we should desire him.
He was despised and rejected by mankind,
a man of suffering, and familiar with pain.
Like one from whom people hide their faces
he was despised, and we held him in low esteem.

Surely he took up our pain
    and bore our suffering,
yet we considered him punished by God,
    stricken by him, and afflicted.
But he was pierced for our transgressions,
    he was crushed for our iniquities;
the punishment that brought us peace was on him,
and by his wounds we are healed.
We all, like sheep, have gone astray,
    each of us has turned to our own way;
and the Lord has laid on him
    the iniquity of us all.

He was oppressed and afflicted,
    yet he did not open his mouth;
he was led like a lamb to the slaughter,
and as a sheep before its shearers is silent,
so he did not open his mouth.
By oppression and judgment he was taken away.
Yet who of his generation protested?
For he was cut off from the land of the living;
for the transgression of my people he was punished.
He was assigned a grave with the wicked,
and with the rich in his death,
though he had done no violence,
nor was any deceit in his mouth.

10 Yet it was the Lord’s will to crush him and cause him to suffer,
and though the Lord makes his life an offering for sin,
he will see his offspring and prolong his days,
and the will of the Lord will prosper in his hand.
11 After he has suffered,
    he will see the light of life and be satisfied;
by his knowledge[ my righteous servant will justify many,
and he will bear their iniquities.
12 Therefore I will give him a portion among the great,
and he will divide the spoils with the strong,
because he poured out his life unto death,
and was numbered with the transgressors.
For he bore the sin of many,
and made intercession for the transgressors.

Thanks so much for stopping by!
May God Richly Bless you!

Jesus is LORD!

Time is growing short!

Seek Him!

Romans 10:9-10

9 If you declare with your mouth, “Jesus is Lord,” and believe in your heart that God raised him from the dead, you will be saved.

10 For it is with your heart that you believe and are justified, and it is with your mouth that you profess your faith and are saved.

How NOT To Lead Worship!!!

A funny video?

An indictment of the church?

Both?

How NOT To Lead Worship!!!

From its description:

Sometimes when we worship, we don't really mean it. What would it look like if we were to sing what we really meant?

This was an illustration from a sermon about worship, and it struck a chord. Sung by George Livings, Doug Pierce, and Melissa Vasquez. from http://www.firstorlando.com

Selah - Wonderful Merciful Savior

Here's another wonderful song/video by Selah edited together with some beautiful images and the lyrics:

Wonderful Merciful Savior

--------------------------------

Matthew 16:21 and 24-27

Jesus Foretells His Death and Resurrection

21  From that time Jesus began to show his disciples that he must go to Jerusalem and suffer many things from the elders and chief priests and scribes, and be killed, and on the third day be raised.

Take Up Your Cross and Follow Jesus

24
Then Jesus told his disciples, “If anyone would come after me, let him deny himself and take up his cross and follow me.
25 For whoever would save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for my sake will find it. 26 For what will it profit a man if he gains the whole world and forfeits his soul? Or what shall a man give in return for his soul? 27  For the Son of Man is going to come with his angels in the glory of his Father, and then he will repay each person according to what he has done.

Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around

Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around

Anyone who knows anything about Johnny Cash could well say it would've been hard at times to convict him of being a Christian.

But until his death he always maintained that he believed...but was a very flawed man.

According to wikipedia:

This song was released in the last years of his life and was one of the last ones he wrote.

In his Autobiography, he said this was one of the most important songs to him because he felt like this was the last chance to put out there a beautiful song about the chilling elements of revelations alongside the second coming of Jesus.

Johnny Cash - The Man Comes Around

And I heard as it were the noise of thunder
One of the four beasts saying come and see and I saw
And behold a white horse

There's a man going around taking names
And he decides who to free and who to blame
Everybody won't be treated all the same
There'll be a golden ladder reaching down
When the Man comes around

The hairs on your arm will stand up
At the terror in each sip and in each sup
Will you partake of that last offered cup?
Or disappear into the potter's ground
When the Man comes around

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling, voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks

Till Armageddon no shalam, no shalom
Then the father hen will call his chickens home
The wise man will bow down before the throne
And at His feet they'll cast their golden crowns
When the Man comes around

Whoever is unjust let him be unjust still
Whoever is righteous let him be righteous still
Whoever is filthy let him be filthy still
Listen to the words long written down
When the Man comes around

Hear the trumpets, hear the pipers
One hundred million angels singing
Multitudes are marching to the big kettledrum
Voices calling and voices crying
Some are born and some are dying
It's Alpha and Omega's kingdom come

And the whirlwind is in the thorn tree
The virgins are all trimming their wicks
The whirlwind is in the thorn tree
It's hard for thee to kick against the pricks

In measured hundred weight and penney pound
When the Man comes around.

Close (Spoken part)
And I heard a voice in the midst of the four beasts
And I looked and behold, a pale horse
And his name that sat on him was Death
And Hell followed with him.

Selah - It Is Well With My Soul

Selah (Todd Smith, Amy Perry, and Allan Hall) performing It is Well with My Soul -
LIVE July 2011 in Holland, Ohio

This video is shot with a hand held camera, during a performance in a church.

The sound is quite good though...so tune out any distractions...and tune in on a beautiful performance!

It Is Well With My Soul

--------------------

The story of this hymn - from wikipedia: http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/It_Is_Well_with_My_Soul

Horatio Spafford

"It Is Well with My Soul is a hymn penned by hymnist Horatio Spafford and composed by Philip Bliss.

This hymn was written after several traumatic events in Spafford’s life. The first was the death of his only son in 1871 at the age of four, shortly followed by the great Chicago Fire which ruined him financially (he had been a successful lawyer).

Then in 1873, he had planned to travel to Europe with his family, but sent the family ahead while he was delayed on business concerning zoning problems following the Great Chicago Fire.

While crossing the Atlantic, their ship sank rapidly after a collision, and all four of Spafford's daughters died. His wife Anna survived and sent him the now famous telegram, "Saved alone . . .".

Shortly afterwards, as Spafford traveled to meet his grieving wife, he was inspired to write these words as his ship passed near where his daughters had died.

--------------------------------------

Anna Spafford

The Spaffords later had three more children, one of whom (a son) died in infancy.

In 1881 the Spaffords, including baby Bertha and newborn Grace, set sail for Israel. The Spaffords moved to Jerusalem and helped found a group called the American Colony; its mission was to serve the poor.

The colony later became the subject of the Nobel prize winning Jerusalem, by Swedish novelist Selma Lagerlöf."

HE REIGNS - The Newsboys

HE REIGNS - The Newsboys

It’s the song of the redeemed
Rising from the African plain
It’s the song of the forgiven
Drowning out the Amazon rain

The song of Asian believers
Filled with God’s holy fire
It’s every tribe, every tongue, every nation

A love song born of a grateful choir

It’s all God’s children singing
Glory, glory, hallelujah
He reigns, He reigns

Let it rise about the four winds
Caught up in the heavenly sound
Let praises echo from the towers of cathedrals
To the faithful gathered underground

Of all the songs sung from the dawn of creation
Some were meant to persist
Of all the bells rung from a thousand steeples

None rings truer than this

It’s all God’s children singing
Glory, glory, hallelujah
He reigns, He reigns

And all the powers of darkness
Tremble at what they’ve just heard
‘Cause all the powers of darkness

Can’t drown out a single word

When all God’s children sing out
Glory, glory, hallelujah
He reigns, He reigns

Keith Green: When I Hear The Praises Start

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/File:Keithgreen.jpg:
Image use:  wikipedia creative commons license information

In the 1970's Keith Green exploded onto the Christian Music scene.

A piano player, who from an early age had pursued fame and fortune in the music industry...first as a precocious child prodigy appearing and performing on the TV Show I've Got a Secret  and later working the rock and roll circuit in Hollywood.

In spite of flirting with fame, he became disillusioned with all that he was experiencing in his life, and along with his wife Melody, began searching for answers.

Ultimately they became Christians around 1973 and Keith began a Christian music ministry in earnest.

Screen Capture from the video

Sometimes Keith's zeal exceeded his understanding of his new faith so it wasn't all smooth sailing for him.

Nevertheless, his first Christian Album For Him Who Has Ears to Hear was released in 1977 and quickly became a Christian rock classic!

Recorded live in the studio with very little overdubbing the album is ranked 5th on Contemporary Christian Music Magazine's 100 Greatest Albums in Christian Music. (wikipedia)

Screen Capture from the video

"When I Hear The Praises Start", the 4th track on the album, quickly became a favorite for many.

Unfortunately, Keith and two of his children (and a number of other passengers) were killed in 1982 when the over-loaded plane they were flying in crashed.

Keith's legacy lives on...and we are Blessed to have recordings like this live performance of him singing "When I Hear The Praises Start".

Parody Of A Modern Church Service

Here is a dash of humor.

Having been to a large number of churches over the last few years...I found this parody of a "modern church service" quite amusing.

A Screen Capture From The Video

Colossians 2:8

8 See to it that no one takes you captive through philosophy and empty deception, according to the tradition of men, according to the elementary principles of the world, rather than according to Christ.

Selah - The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power

I LOVE this one!

Hope you enjoy it!

Selah - The Blood Will Never Lose Its Power

Screen capture from the video

Matthew 27

50 And Jesus cried out again with a loud voice, and yielded up His spirit.
51 Then, behold, the veil of the temple was torn in two from top to bottom; and the earth quaked, and the rocks were split, 52 and the graves were opened; and many bodies of the saints who had fallen asleep were raised; 53 and coming out of the graves after His resurrection, they went into the holy city and appeared to many.
54 So when the centurion and those with him, who were guarding Jesus, saw the earthquake and the things that had happened, they feared greatly, saying, “Truly this was the Son of God!”

Matthew 28

He Is Risen

28 Now after the Sabbath, as the first day of the week began to dawn, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb. And behold, there was a great earthquake; for an angel of the Lord descended from heaven, and came and rolled back the stone from the door,[a] and sat on it. His countenance was like lightning, and his clothing as white as snow. And the guards shook for fear of him, and became like dead men.
But the angel answered and said to the women, “Do not be afraid, for I know that you seek Jesus who was crucified. He is not here; for He is risen, as He said. Come, see the place where the Lord lay. And go quickly and tell His disciples that He is risen from the dead, and indeed He is going before you into Galilee; there you will see Him. Behold, I have told you.”
So they went out quickly from the tomb with fear and great joy, and ran to bring His disciples word.

Job 38 - Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:

“Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.
Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
On what were its footings set,
or who laid its cornerstone —
while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?

“Who shut up the sea behind doors
when it burst forth from the womb,
when I made the clouds its garment
and wrapped it in thick darkness,
10 when I fixed limits for it
and set its doors and bars in place,
11 when I said, ‘This far you may come and no farther;
here is where your proud waves halt’?

Christian Music: Psalm 61 - Matthew Ward

Mathew Ward with sisters Annie Herring and Nelly Greisen, spent the 1970's and early 80's performing together in a Christian Band they called 2nd Chapter Of Acts.

In 1978 they released a live album with Christian Guitar Master and singer Phil Keaggy called How The West Was One.

Photo David Ball, 2nd Chapter Of Acts in Concert 1985
http://upload.wikimedia.org/wikipedia/commons/b/b4/2nd-Chapter-of-Acts.jpg

According to wikipedia: "The album was culled from a series of 18 concerts held throughout the western United States in 1977."

Mathew Ward, sometimes also called "The Wailer" because of his distinctive vocal style, sings a song on the album he co-wrote with pianist Richard Souther:  Psalm 61.

This is a stripped down version of the song they'd also recorded for a Ward solo album that had a more elaborate arrangement.

In this case, it's just Ward singing, accompanied by Souther on Piano.

Although this is a YouTube video...it is audio only.

So unless you're driving a car or operating heavy machinery...it'll be fine if you just close your eyes and sing along.

Psalm 61

Hear my cry, O God;
Give heed to my prayer.
From the ends of the earth I call to Thee when my heart is faint;
Lead me to the rock that is higher than I.
For Thou has been a refuge for me,
And a tower of strength against the enemy.
4 And let me dwell in Thy tent forever

Christian Music: Larry Norman - I Wish We'd All Been Ready

Larry Norman, 2001 - by Ekiledal
wikipedia.org/ Larry_Norman

Larry Norman was a pioneer of Christian Rock in the 1970's...in an era when many in the church opposed this "style" of music.

Even for fans, his music was sometimes challenging...but there is no question about his impact on Christian Music.

After a long illness, Larry passed away on in 2008.

One gift he left behind is his classic song, "I Wish We'd All Been Ready":

Matthew 25

13  Watch therefore, for you know neither the day nor the hour.
