Gospel Music: Linda Gibson Johnson - "Buy Me Gold"

Video and lyrics below

-----------------------------------------------------------------

Revelation 3:18-22
18 I counsel you to buy from me gold refined in the fire, so you can become rich; and white clothes to wear, so you can cover your shameful nakedness; and salve to put on your eyes, so you can see.
19 Those whom I love I rebuke and discipline. So be earnest and repent. 20 Here I am! I stand at the door and knock. If anyone hears my voice and opens the door, I will come in and eat with that person, and they with me.
21 To the one who is victorious, I will give the right to sit with me on my throne, just as I was victorious and sat down with my Father on his throne. 22 Whoever has ears, let them hear what the Spirit says to the churches.”

Buy Me Gold - Lyrics

Verse 1:
John was on the isle of Patmos,
He was talking with the Son of Man.
The Lord said, "John, go and write it down",
So he did with his own hand,

Then the Lord said, "Tell 'em,
Go and tell 'em just what I say,
They'd better be ready to meet me,
When they stand at the judgment day",

Chorus:
He said, "Buy me gold, tried in the fire,
Melt it down, turn the flames a little bit higher,
Don't give me no gold, Oh, that ain't been purified,
Honey, it just ain't good enough, if it ain't been tried",

Verse 2:
People talk about old time religion,
While livin' in a modern way,
They like to reminisce about the saints of old,
How it was back in the day.

They've got all of those stories,
Gathered up in their minds,
Don't they know the Lord's still looking,
For a gold of just that kind,

(Chorus)

Verse 3:
Now you tell me all about your troubles,
Things you been a'going through,
You say you just can't make it,
Well, I'll say a little prayer for you,

You ain't seen nothing like it,
And you've almost lost your mind,
Don't you know its gotta get hotter,
If your ever gonna be refined,

(Chorus)

Christian Music Video: Amy Grant - El Shaddai

The video and lyrics are found below

(footnotes *)

---------------------------------------------

Amy Grant - El Shaddai

In 1981, when Amy Grant was still in her early 20's, she released an album called Age To Age that had a number of excellent songs on it....but one song seemed to stand out and resonate with many people.

Her beautiful version of the song El Shaddai, was written by Michael Card and John Thompson, and incorporated direct quotes from scripture in the original Hebrew language.

Hebrew Translations

"El Shaddai is most often translated as "God Almighty (אל שׁדי)"...and about half the lyrics in the chorus are also in Hebrew.

El-Elyon na Adonai is a combination of two names for God, meaning "God Most High (אלעליון), O Lord (אדני)" (na (נא) translated by some as an earnest or humble request.
Erkamka na Adonai is taken from Psalm 18:1 (except for the "na," which is added) and is normally translated "I love you (ארחמך), O Lord."

The Songs Popularity

"The song was a hit single for Grant, reaching the top of the Billboard Christian chart. It won 'Song of the Year' and Michael Card won 'Songwriter of the Year' at the 1983 GMA Dove Awards.

In 2001, it was also named one of the 'Songs of the Century" by the The Recording Industry Association of America.
This version of Grant's El Shaddai is primarily performed on piano, with harp and string accompaniment. Drums do not appear in it until the climactic third chorus."

-------------------------------------

Most importantly, at the time it was released the Christian recording industry seemed less of a business and more of a ministry...and this worshipful song held a deep meaning and spoke to many people...and its gentle testimony to Jesus as Lord was unmistakable.

Though it has been many years since its release, it's still speaking to many people...and whether it is familiar to you...or new to your ears...may its truth find its way to your heart today.

El Shaddai - Lyrics and Meanings
Chorus:

El-Shaddai, El-Shaddai,
(meaning "God Almighty, God Almighty")
El-Elyon na Adonai,
(meaning "God in the highest, Oh, Lord")
Age to age, You're still the same,
By the power of the name,
El-Shaddai, El-Shaddai,
Erkamka na Adonai,
(meaning "We will love You, Oh, Lord")
We will praise and lift You high,
El-Shaddai,

Through Your love
And through the ram,
You saved the son
Of Abraham,
Through the power
Of Your hand,
Turned the sea
Into dry land,
To the outcast
On her knees,
You were the God
Who really sees.
And by Your might,
You set Your children free,

Chorus

Through the years,
You made it clear,
That the time of Christ
Was near,
Though the people
Couldn't see,
What Messiah ought to be,
Though Your Word
Contained the plan,
They just could not understand,
Your most awesome work was done,
Though the frailty of Your son,

Chorus

Christian Worship Music: I Love You Lord - Maranatha Music

The Lord Speaks
38 Then the Lord spoke to Job out of the storm. He said:
--------------------
4 “Where were you when I laid the earth’s foundation?
    Tell me, if you understand.
5 Who marked off its dimensions? Surely you know!
Who stretched a measuring line across it?
6 On what were its footings set,
    or who laid its cornerstone—
7 while the morning stars sang together
and all the angels shouted for joy?
