While channel surfing TV recently, I caught part of Robert Mugge's excellent 1984 film, Gospel According To Al Green.

The wonderful project includes behind the scenes interviews with the Rev. Al Green — along with some of his stellar live performances — and documents his transformation from a highly successful pop and soul singer to legendary Gospel great.

If you haven't seen the film yet — I highly recommend it.

It's available on both Blu-Ray and DVD through Amazon — as well as on Amazon's Prime Video Service.

I loved the live version of Pass Me Not from the film and went looking for it and found it on Mr. Mugge's Vimeo Channel — and he has generously allowed me to post it here.

Green begins the first 40 seconds of the video clip sharing that his experience in popular music helped shape him as a performer — but saying in the end it is "spiritual fire" that audiences respond to.

Then, as if to illustrate the point, Green launches into his sanctified, fiery performance of Pass Me Not.

Amy Grant - El Shaddai

In 1981, when Amy Grant was still in her early 20's, she released an album called Age To Age that had a number of excellent songs on it....but one song seemed to stand out and resonate with many people.

Her beautiful version of the song El Shaddai, was written by Michael Card and John Thompson, and incorporated direct quotes from scripture in the original Hebrew language.

"El Shaddai is most often translated as "God Almighty (אל שׁדי)"...and about half the lyrics in the chorus are also in Hebrew.

El-Elyon na Adonai is a combination of two names for God, meaning "God Most High (אלעליון), O Lord (אדני)" (na (נא) translated by some as an earnest or humble request.

Erkamka na Adonai is taken from Psalm 18:1 (except for the "na," which is added) and is normally translated "I love you (ארחמך), O Lord."

The Songs Popularity

"The song was a hit single for Grant, reaching the top of the Billboard Christian chart. It won 'Song of the Year' and Michael Card won 'Songwriter of the Year' at the 1983 GMA Dove Awards. 

In 2001, it was also named one of the 'Songs of the Century" by the The Recording Industry Association of America.

This version of Grant's El Shaddai is primarily performed on piano, with harp and string accompaniment. Drums do not appear in it until the climactic third chorus."

Video: Daves Highway Performs Lead Me To The Cross (by Hillsong)

A while ago I was surfing on YouTube and came across Dave's Highway, a young gospel group from Mississippi.

I remember being impressed with their music and thought that if they kept at it they would simply get better and better.

Just today I saw a more recent video of them performing "Lead Me To The Cross" by Hillsong and they had in fact improved a great deal.

Posted on April 2, 2011, and recorded live in what appears to be their living room Erika 13 (on keys), Zachary 15 (on guitar), and Delaney 16 create a very beautiful version of this song.

They announced then that they had a new CD coming out with 10 of their own songs.
